Common 3D Printing Problems & How We Prevent Them
Every 3D print can go wrong in a dozen small ways, and most people only see the finished result. At Tex's Prints in Cypress, TX, preventing those failures before they happen is most of what we do. The goal is not to fix a bad print after the fact; it is to set up each job so it comes out right the first time. Here is a tour of the problems we watch for and how we keep them from reaching your part.
Problems that start in the file
A surprising number of print failures are baked into the model long before printing. These are the ones we catch when we inspect your file.
Non-manifold geometry
A printable model must be watertight: a single closed surface with a clear inside and outside. Non-manifold geometry, holes in the mesh, flipped faces, or edges shared by the wrong number of surfaces, leaves the slicer guessing. The result can be missing chunks or a failed slice entirely. We repair these before printing, and we will let you know if your file needs it.
Thin walls
A wall that looks solid on screen may be thinner than a single printed line. When that happens, it either does not print at all or comes out as a flimsy film. We check wall thickness against the nozzle and recommend thickening anything too delicate.
Wrong scale
STL files carry no units, so a model can import ten times too big or too small. We confirm the intended size with you, which is one reason a 3MF file, which stores units, is handy.
Problems that happen during printing
Other issues come from the physics of melting and stacking plastic. These are managed through machine setup, orientation, and material choice.

Warping
Warping happens when a part cools unevenly and contracts, pulling its corners up off the bed. Larger flat parts and certain materials are most prone to it. We manage warping with the right material for the geometry, careful bed preparation, and a controlled print environment.
Layer adhesion
A 3D print is strong only if each layer fuses to the one below. Print too cool and the layers barely stick, leaving a part that splits apart under stress. We dial in temperatures for each material and, just as importantly, orient the part so the strongest direction of the layers lines up with the forces it will face.
Stringing and oozing
When melted plastic leaks during travel moves, it leaves thin strings across the print. Tuned retraction settings and dry filament keep this in check. Moisture in filament is a common culprit, which is why storage matters.
Orientation is half the battle
How a part sits on the bed affects strength, surface finish, support needs, and print time all at once. The same model can print beautifully one way and poorly another. We choose orientation deliberately for each part, balancing:
- Strength along the direction of expected load
- Minimizing supports on visible surfaces
- Putting the best finish where it shows
- Keeping fine details printable
This is one of the biggest reasons a professional print tends to beat a first attempt at home.
What you can do to help
You do not need to be an expert, but a few things make a clean print more likely:
- Send the largest, most detailed version of your file you have
- Tell us how the part will be used, so we can pick material and orientation
- Mention any surfaces that must look perfect or fit precisely
- If you have units in mind, say so, or send a 3MF that stores them
We catch it before it costs you
The thread running through all of this is prevention. We inspect every file for watertightness, wall thickness, and scale, then plan material and orientation around how the part will actually be used. By the time the printer starts, most of the ways a print can fail have already been ruled out.
