From Photo to Printed Part: Replacing Something You Can't Buy Anymore
Some of the most satisfying work we do isn't fancy. It's bringing something back to life. A drawer that won't close because a plastic roller snapped. A treadmill sidelined by a cracked clip. A vintage car missing a trim piece nobody has stocked since the 90s. When you can't buy it anymore, you can often print it. Here is exactly how that works.
The workflow, start to finish
Replacing a part you can't buy follows a reliable path. You don't need to know any of the technical steps yourself; you just need to get us enough to start.
Step 1: Show us the part
The best starting point is the broken part itself, or the cavity it fits into. If you can drop it off at our Cypress shop, even better, because a physical reference removes guesswork.
If you can't hand it over, photos work. The keys to a useful photo are:
- Multiple angles: top, bottom, and sides.
- A scale reference in the shot: a ruler, calipers, a coin, or a tape measure.
- Good, even lighting so edges and features are clear.
- A shot of where it mounts if the part is missing entirely.
Step 2: Measurements
This is where a replacement part lives or dies. We capture the dimensions that matter: overall size, hole diameters, peg spacing, wall thickness, and any features that have to mate with something else.
If you are comfortable taking measurements yourself, a few caliper readings on the critical features speed everything up. If not, that's fine, we measure from the sample or work it out from your scaled photos. The more precise the input, the better the fit.
Step 3: Modeling
We recreate the part as a 3D model, often improving it along the way. A part that broke at a thin neck can be reinforced. A clip that fatigued can be redesigned with a tougher geometry. This is the quiet advantage of a printed replacement: you don't have to copy the flaw that broke it in the first place.
Step 4: Material selection
A replacement is only as good as the material it's printed in. We match the plastic to where the part lives and works:

For Texas conditions this matters more than people expect. A replacement knob printed in PLA might soften in a hot car; the same part in ABS or ASA shrugs it off.
Step 5: Print, test, and fit
We print the part, clean it up, and verify the critical dimensions. If it has to mate with your original assembly, a test fit confirms it before you ever take it home. If something needs a tweak, being local means a quick revision instead of a shipping round trip.
What can and can't be replaced
3D printing is powerful, but it's honest work to set expectations.
Great candidates:
- Plastic clips, knobs, brackets, spacers, bushings, and housings
- Gears and rollers (in the right material)
- Discontinued trim and cosmetic pieces
- Custom adapters and mounts
Trickier or not a fit:
- Parts under extreme structural load better suited to metal
- Pieces requiring tight sealing or precision beyond FDM tolerances (resin may help)
- Anything safety-critical where a certified OEM part is legally required
