Post-Processing 3D Prints: Sanding, Priming, Painting & Smoothing
A 3D print fresh off the plate has layer lines, support marks, and a matte texture. That is fine for a functional bracket, but if you want a part that looks injection-molded or paint-ready, it takes finishing work. Post-processing is where a good print becomes a great product. Here is the realistic workflow, step by step.
Start with the print itself
The best finish starts before any sandpaper. A part printed at a finer layer height (0.12 to 0.16 mm instead of 0.2 to 0.28 mm) has shallower layer lines and far less to sand away. Orienting the show surface away from supports also saves hours. If you tell us a part will be painted, we set it up to make finishing easier.
Step 1: Clean up supports and seams
Remove support material with flush cutters and pick off any remnants. Trim the seam line, the small ridge where each layer started, with a hobby knife. Knock down any stringing or blobs. This is the foundation, do not skip it.
Step 2: Sand progressively
Sanding is the heart of finishing. The rule is to step up through grits, never jump. Each grit removes the scratches left by the one before.

Wet sanding from 320 onward keeps dust down and gives a cleaner result. Sand in small circles and check your progress under raking light, which reveals remaining lines that look invisible head-on.
Step 3: Prime and fill
Primer does two jobs: it gives paint something to grip, and a high-build filler primer fills the fine valleys between layers. Spray two or three light coats, let each flash off, then sand the primer back with 400 grit. You will see low spots show up as you sand, those are the layer lines still hiding. Spot-fill with putty or more primer and repeat until the surface reads smooth and uniform gray.
This prime-sand-repeat cycle is what separates a hobby finish from a professional one. Most of the visual quality lives here.
Step 4: Paint
With a properly primed and sanded surface, painting is straightforward:
- Wipe down with isopropyl alcohol to remove dust and oils
- Apply color in several light coats rather than one heavy one
- Let each coat flash before the next
- Finish with a clear coat, matte or gloss, to protect the color and unify the sheen
Rattle cans give great results with patience. For a durable finish, a clear coat is well worth the extra step.
Vapor smoothing for ABS and ASA
There is a shortcut for the right materials. ABS and ASA can be vapor smoothed: controlled exposure to a solvent vapor that gently melts the outer surface, letting it flow into a glossy, layer-line-free skin. Done correctly it produces a finish that looks molded, with no sanding at all.
A few honest caveats:
- Vapor smoothing works on ABS and ASA, not standard PLA or PETG
- It slightly softens fine detail, so it suits smooth, rounded parts better than sharp text
- It must be done safely with proper ventilation, this is not a kitchen-table project

What about PLA and PETG?
PLA sands and primes beautifully, it just does not respond to vapor smoothing. PETG is tougher and a little gummier to sand, so it favors a print-fine-and-prime approach over heavy sanding. For both, the sand-prime-paint workflow above gives excellent results.
Functional finishing
Not all finishing is cosmetic. We also:
- Install heat-set threaded inserts for durable, reusable screw threads
- Drill and ream holes to exact size
- Tap threads directly into thicker parts
- Bond multi-part prints into a single seamless piece
