If you have ever asked a 3D printing shop "what does this cost?" and gotten a shrug or a vague "it depends," you are not alone. The honest answer is that it genuinely does depend, but the variables are knowable. Here is exactly what drives the price of a custom 3D print in 2026, with real ranges from our shop in Cypress, TX.
The five things that actually drive price
Every quote we write comes down to the same handful of factors. None of them are mysterious.
- Size and material volume. Bigger parts use more plastic and take longer to print. A part twice as tall isn't twice the cost, it can be much more, because volume grows fast.
- Material choice. Standard PLA is the most affordable. Engineering materials like PETG, ABS, ASA, nylon, or carbon-fiber-filled filaments cost more per gram and often print slower.
- Infill and wall thickness. A decorative model at 10 percent infill is cheap. A load-bearing bracket at 60 percent infill with thick walls uses far more material and machine time.
- Detail and resolution. Fine layer heights and tight tolerances mean slower prints. Resin parts with crisp detail carry their own pricing because of resin cost and post-processing labor.
- Quantity. One-off prints carry all the setup overhead on a single part. Run ten or a hundred and the per-unit price drops because we can batch the plate and dial in the process once.

A useful rule of thumb: most of the small replacement parts and one-off fixtures people bring us land between 15 and 60 dollars. The eye-watering numbers usually come from very large prints, exotic materials, or rush turnarounds.
What you are actually paying for
3D printing looks like "press print and walk away," but a good custom part involves real work beyond the machine time:
- File review. We check your model for printability, wall thickness, and orientation before anything runs.
- Setup and slicing. Choosing orientation, supports, and settings is where experience saves you money and failed prints.
- Machine time. This can be hours for a small part or multiple days for a large one.
- Material and energy. Filament, resin, support material, and the electricity to run heated beds and chambers.
- Post-processing. Support removal, cleanup, sanding, washing and curing for resin, and quality checks.
When you pay a premium shop versus the cheapest listing online, you are usually paying for that file review and post-processing, which is the difference between a part that fits and a part that ends up in the trash.
Why we don't do instant online quotes
Plenty of sites will spit out an instant price the second you drop in a file. We have chosen not to, and it is a deliberate quality decision.
Automated quotes assume your file is print-ready, your material is interchangeable, and your tolerances don't matter. For a decorative trinket, fine. For a part that has to fit a real machine, mount under a Texas sun, or survive in a hot garage in July, those assumptions get expensive fast. An instant quote can't tell you that your wall is too thin to survive, or that ASA would outlast PLA outdoors by years.
