Massing and study models
Early in design, you are testing proportion, shape, and how a building sits on its site. Massing models do not need fine detail, so they print fast and cheap in PLA. Print several options and set them side by side to make a decision in a meeting instead of an email thread.
Presentation and client models
When the design is set and you need to sell it, detail matters. These models show facades, fenestration, and roofline, and they look polished on a table. PLA prints clean and accepts paint; for the sharpest small details, resin captures crisp edges that FDM cannot.
Site and context models
A building does not exist alone. Site models show terrain, neighboring structures, and landscaping so a client understands context. These often combine a detailed primary building with simpler massing for the surroundings.

Scale, detail, and what survives printing
Choosing a scale is a balance between table space and detail. A small scale fits a whole development on a table but loses fine features; a larger scale shows mullions and trim but takes more material and time. A few realities to design around:
- Very thin elements like railings or window mullions can be too fragile at small scales; we can thicken them slightly or print them in resin
- Tiny lettering and signage usually need resin to read clearly
- Large models can be printed in sections and assembled, which also lets you use different materials per part
- Removable roofs or floors let clients see interior layouts
