FDM vs Resin 3D Printing: Which Does Your Project Need?
"Should this be FDM or resin?" is one of the first questions we ask about any project, because the two processes are good at almost opposite things. Pick right and the part comes out exactly as intended. Pick wrong and you fight the process the whole way. Here's how to know which one your project needs.
The two processes in plain terms
FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) melts plastic filament and lays it down layer by layer, like a very precise hot glue gun guided by a computer. It's the most common form of 3D printing and the workhorse for functional parts.
Resin printing (SLA/MSLA) uses light to cure liquid resin into solid layers, one thin slice at a time. It produces extremely fine detail and smooth surfaces, but the parts and materials behave differently from FDM plastics.

When FDM is the right call
FDM is our default for anything functional, structural, or large. It wins when you need:
- Strength and durability. FDM parts in PETG, ABS, or ASA take real abuse, flex without shattering, and hold up under load.
- Larger parts. Enclosures, brackets, fixtures, props, and housings are FDM territory.
- Material variety. Need heat resistance, UV stability for the Texas sun, flexibility, or wear resistance? FDM has a material for it.
- Cost efficiency. For most everyday parts, FDM is more economical, especially at larger sizes or in small batches.
Examples: replacement brackets, tool holders, outdoor sensor housings (in ASA), automotive mounts, jigs and fixtures, large cosplay pieces.
When resin is worth it
Resin shines when detail and surface quality matter more than raw toughness or size:
- Fine detail. Crisp text, sharp edges, intricate textures, and small features that FDM would blur.
- Smooth surfaces. Parts that need to look molded straight off the printer, with minimal sanding.
- Small precision parts. Tight tolerances on small geometry where layer lines would interfere.
- Display and presentation models. Where appearance is the whole point.
Examples: miniatures and tabletop models, jewelry and pattern masters, dental-style and anatomical models, small high-detail prototypes, parts destined for casting.
The trade-off is that many resins are more brittle than FDM plastics and the parts are typically smaller, so resin is rarely the answer for something that has to take a beating or span a foot.
How to decide quickly
Run your part through these questions:
- Does it need to survive impact, load, or heat? Lean FDM.
- Is fine cosmetic detail the point? Lean resin.
- Is it bigger than your hand? Probably FDM.
- Does it live outdoors or in a hot car? FDM in ASA or ABS.
- Is it a tiny, intricate display piece? Resin.
- On a tight budget for a functional part? Usually FDM.
A lot of projects are obvious once you frame them this way. A durable outdoor mount is FDM. A detailed miniature is resin. The genuinely tricky ones, a part that needs both fine detail and strength, are exactly where it helps to talk it through with someone who runs both.
