STL, STEP, 3MF & OBJ: 3D Printing File Formats Explained
When you get ready to send a model for 3D printing, you hit an alphabet soup of file types: STL, STEP, 3MF, OBJ, and more. Picking the right one genuinely affects the quality and accuracy of your part. Here is what each format is, when to use it, and what to do if you do not have any file at all.
The two families of 3D files
Almost every 3D file falls into one of two camps, and understanding the split makes everything else click.
- Mesh files describe a surface as thousands of tiny triangles. They are great for printing but have no real engineering data, the curves are approximated and you cannot easily edit dimensions. STL and OBJ are mesh formats.
- Parametric / solid (CAD) files describe the actual geometry mathematically, true curves, exact dimensions, and editable features. STEP is the universal one. These are ideal when accuracy and editability matter.
The four formats you will actually encounter

STL: the universal workhorse
STL is the oldest and most common 3D printing format. It stores nothing but a triangle mesh, no units, no color, no editing data. It is universally supported and perfectly fine for most prints. Its one quirk is that it has no built-in units, so a model can import at the wrong scale if the source software disagrees. We always confirm scale before printing. STEP: the engineer's choice
STEP (.step or .stp) is a true CAD format. It stores exact, editable geometry with real curves instead of triangle approximations. If your part has precise dimensions, tight tolerances, or might need tweaks, STEP is the best file you can send us. We can adjust a clearance, thicken a wall, or compensate a hole far more cleanly from a STEP file than from a mesh. For functional engineering parts, STEP is our favorite to receive.
3MF: the modern all-in-one
3MF is the newer format designed specifically for 3D printing. It is a mesh format like STL but smarter: it stores units (so scale is never ambiguous), color, multiple parts, and even print settings and metadata in one tidy file. It tends to produce smaller, more reliable files than STL. If your software offers 3MF, it is a great choice.
OBJ: when color and texture matter
OBJ is a mesh format that, unlike STL, can carry color and texture information (usually paired with companion files). It shines for full-color display models and scanned objects. For full-color printing or detailed visual models, OBJ preserves the appearance STL would throw away.
Which should you send us?
Here is the short version:
- Functional or precise part you might want edited: send STEP if you can.
- Standard print, you just want it made: STL or 3MF both work great.
- Full-color or textured model: OBJ or 3MF.
- You exported from a slicer already: 3MF carries the most useful info.
If you can only send one and it is an STL, that is completely fine, it is what most files are, and we print from STL all day. STEP just gives us more room to help you refine the design.
A few file gotchas we watch for
- Scale and units: STL and OBJ do not store units, so a part can arrive ten times too big or small. We always confirm the intended size.
- Non-manifold meshes: holes, flipped faces, or overlapping geometry can make a mesh unprintable. We check and repair these.
- Over-decimated meshes: a low-triangle export makes curves look faceted. A higher-resolution export prints smoother.
We run every incoming file through these checks before quoting, so you do not have to be an expert.
No file? You can still get a part
Here is the part people are most relieved to hear: you do not need any 3D file to work with us. If you have a broken part to replace, a sketch on a napkin, or just a photo with a measurement or two, that is enough for us to get started.
