3D Printing for Drones & RC: Mounts, Frames & Parts

Drones and RC vehicles are unforgiving on parts. Vibration, sun, heat soak in a parked truck, and the inevitable crash all gang up on whatever you bolt to the airframe. 3D printing is perfect for this world because you can iterate fast and make parts that do not exist off the shelf. The catch is that material choice makes or breaks the result. Here is how we approach drone and RC work at Tex's Prints.

Match the material to the job

There is no single best plastic for RC. The right answer depends on whether the part needs to be stiff, tough, heat-resistant, sun-resistant, or able to absorb a hit.

A quick rule of thumb:

  • Need it tough and easy? PETG.
  • Need it to survive Texas sun on a parked drone? ASA, because it is UV-stable and will not chalk or get brittle like PLA.
  • Need it to bend instead of break in a crash? TPU.
  • Need it to take heat near electronics or motors? ABS, which holds up around 100C.

The parts people print most

Across quadcopters, FPV rigs, RC cars, and boats, the same categories come up again and again:

  • Camera and GoPro mounts, often with vibration isolation
  • Antenna mounts and standoffs
  • Motor guards and arm protectors
  • Battery trays and strap mounts
  • Landing gear, skids, and bumpers
  • Custom frame plates and canopies
  • Servo mounts and linkage parts

For flexible isolation and crash-absorbing pieces, TPU is the hero. For structural plates and mounts, PETG and ASA carry the load.

Designing parts that survive

A few habits separate parts that last from parts that fail on the first hard landing:

  • Orient layers so stress pulls across them, not along the layer seams
  • Add fillets at corners to spread load instead of concentrating it
  • Bump up wall count and infill on structural parts rather than relying on thin shells
  • Print bumpers and skids in TPU so impact energy goes into flex, not fracture
  • Keep weight in mind; over-building a flying part costs you flight time

Iterate fast, then commit

The real advantage of printing RC parts is speed. Print a mount, fly it, see what cracks, tweak the model, reprint. You can run three revisions in the time a mail-order part would take to arrive. Once a design is dialed in, we can print a run in the durable material it deserves.
