What to prototype
Form and fit models
Early on, you usually care about shape, size, and how parts go together. PLA is the workhorse here: cheap, dimensionally stable, and great for confirming geometry. Print three versions, line them up on a desk, and pick the winner.
Functional prototypes
When the prototype needs to actually do its job, material matters. PETG flexes and takes abuse without becoming brittle. ABS and ASA handle heat and outdoor exposure for parts that will live in a truck cab or a garage. These are the materials for snap-fits, brackets, enclosures, and anything that gets handled hard.
High-detail and appearance prototypes
For small parts with fine features, threads, or smooth show surfaces, resin printing captures detail that FDM cannot. Think connector housings, miniatures, jewelry masters, or a polished concept model for a pitch.

Designing for iteration
A few habits keep your loop tight:
- Change one thing per revision so you know what fixed the problem
- Name your files clearly (v1, v2-thicker-wall) so we both stay synced
- Leave tolerance on mating parts; you can always tighten later
- Mark up the physical print with a pen and photograph it for the next round

Turnaround and cost
Most single prototype parts move quickly once we have a printable file. Simple PLA fit checks are typically same-week; larger or multi-material jobs take a little longer.
