3D Printing Quality: What to Look For

"Good quality" means different things on different parts. A flawless display model and a rugged functional bracket are judged by completely different standards. Knowing what actually matters for your part helps you set realistic expectations and recognize solid work when you see it. Here is how we think about 3D print quality at Tex's Prints, and what you should look for.

Quality is fitness for purpose

Before chasing perfection, ask what the part needs to do. A prototype meant to check fit can be rough and fast. A part a customer will hold needs a clean surface. A load-bearing component needs strength above all, even if it looks plain. The best print is the one that does its job well, not the one with the prettiest photo.

With that framing, here are the dimensions of quality worth inspecting.

What to inspect

Layer consistency

Look at the side walls. Layers should be even and uniform, without sudden gaps, bulges, or shifts. Some layer lines are normal in FDM printing; they are how the process works. What you do not want to see are skipped layers, blobs, or a visible seam that wanders. Consistency signals a well-tuned machine and dialed-in settings.

Dimensional accuracy

For functional parts, the numbers matter more than looks. Holes should be round and correctly sized, mating surfaces flat, and overall dimensions within tolerance. If a part has to fit a shaft or bolt pattern, accuracy beats finish every time. A good shop will confirm critical dimensions rather than eyeball them.

Surface finish

Top surfaces should be smooth and fully filled, not pocked with gaps. Overhangs and bridges should not sag badly. Strength and layer adhesion

Strength comes from good layer bonding, appropriate wall thickness, and the right infill for the load. A part can look perfect and still snap if layers did not fuse well or the material was wrong for the stress. This is hard to see by eye, which is why describing how the part is loaded helps us build it right.

Support removal and clean-up

Where supports were used, the contact points should be cleaned up, not left as a forest of nubs. Good support removal is part of the craft. Rough, untouched support scars usually mean a rushed job.

Warping and adhesion problems

Warping shows up as corners curling off the bed, especially on larger flat parts in materials like ABS. A quality print sits flat and true. Layer separation, where the print splits along horizontal lines, points to a temperature or material issue. Neither should make it to your hands from a careful shop.

Cosmetic versus functional standards

It is fair to expect a clean cosmetic finish when that is what you are paying for, and it is unfair to expect a hidden structural part to look like a showpiece. Tell us which one you need.
