ABS vs ASA: Which Tough Plastic for Your Part?
ABS and ASA are close cousins. Both are tough, impact-resistant engineering plastics that handle heat far better than PLA. If you have a part that needs to take abuse or live somewhere warm, you are choosing between these two. The deciding factor usually comes down to one word: sunlight.
The family resemblance
ASA was essentially designed as an outdoor-friendly upgrade to ABS. They share similar strength, similar stiffness, and similar heat resistance, with usable temperatures around 100C. Where they part ways is UV stability and how they handle the elements.

When ABS makes sense
ABS is the classic tough plastic, the same family as LEGO bricks. It is a strong, slightly cheaper choice for functional parts that stay indoors or out of direct sun.
- Enclosures and housings for electronics
- Functional prototypes that need to survive drops and stress
- Automotive interior components and brackets
- Parts you plan to acetone-smooth for a glossy finish
ABS responds well to acetone vapor smoothing, which melts the surface slightly to remove layer lines. If a smooth, almost injection-molded look matters and the part lives indoors, ABS is a strong pick.
The catch with ABS
Leave ABS in direct sunlight and it yellows, gets brittle, and breaks down over time. UV is its weakness. That is exactly the problem ASA was created to solve.
When ASA wins, especially in Texas
ASA gives you ABS-level toughness plus genuine UV and weather resistance. For anything that lives outside in the Greater Houston sun, ASA is the smart default.

We are in Cypress, where summer sun is relentless. An ABS part on a fence, mailbox, or truck exterior will degrade noticeably faster than the same part in ASA. The small material premium for ASA is cheap insurance against a part that yellows and cracks in a season.
Both print hot, and that is fine
A quick practical note: both ABS and ASA print at higher temperatures than PLA and both can warp or split if printed in a drafty room. We print them in an enclosed, temperature-controlled setup to keep layers bonded and dimensions stable. This is not a material you want to fight with on an open desktop printer, which is part of why customers send these jobs to us.
