PLA vs Resin: Detail, Strength, and When Each Wins
If you are weighing PLA against resin, you are really comparing two different worlds of 3D printing. PLA is an FDM filament that builds parts layer by layer from a melted plastic strand. Resin printing (SLA or MSLA) cures liquid photopolymer with UV light into ultra-fine layers. Both are excellent, but they win at very different jobs.

Where PLA wins
PLA prints fast, comes in every color imaginable, and is forgiving on big parts. It is the right call when you need:
- Functional prototypes and fixtures you can hold, test, and iterate on
- Larger enclosures, brackets, jigs, and display pieces
- Cost-sensitive runs where you want many copies without breaking the budget
- Parts that stay indoors and out of direct heat

Before committing to an expensive process, a PLA print lets you check fit, scale, and ergonomics in your hand. That fast feedback loop is why so many makers reach for it first.
Where resin wins
Resin shines when detail is the whole point. The layer heights are dramatically finer than FDM, so you get crisp edges, smooth curves, and tiny features that filament simply cannot resolve.

The tradeoffs to know
Resin parts are typically more brittle than FDM parts, so they are not ideal for things that flex, snap-fit, or take repeated load. Resin also requires post-processing: every print gets washed and then UV-cured to reach full hardness. That adds time and handling, which is part of why resin costs more per part.
A simple way to decide
Ask yourself two questions:
- Does this part need to survive handling, load, or heat? Lean PLA or a tougher filament.
- Does this part live or die on surface detail at small scale? Lean resin.
