For some people, buying a printer is absolutely the right move. For most people with an occasional part to make, a service is cheaper, faster, and far less frustrating. Here is how to tell which one you are.
The hidden truth about owning a printer
The printer is the cheap part. A capable desktop FDM machine is genuinely affordable now. What costs you is everything around it: spools of filament in multiple materials, replacement nozzles and belts, the time to learn slicing software, the failed prints while you dial it in, and the bench space it permanently occupies. None of that shows up on the box price.

When buying a printer makes sense
Owning a machine is a great choice if you check most of these boxes:
- You print something most weeks, not most years.
- You enjoy the hobby; tinkering is a feature, not a chore.
- Your parts are forgiving (display pieces, prototypes, fun projects).
- You want to iterate instantly at 2 a.m. without anyone else involved.
- You have space and patience for maintenance and the learning curve.
If that is you, buy the printer. You will get your money's worth and have fun doing it.
When a service makes sense
A service is the smarter choice if:
- You need a part occasionally, not constantly.
- The part has to be right: it must fit, hold load, or survive Texas heat.
- You need a material you would not otherwise stock (ASA, TPU, resin).
- You do not want to learn slicing or troubleshoot failed prints.
- You value your time more than the novelty.
- You need professional, repeatable quality without the trial-and-error.
The math most people skip
Say you need three custom parts this year. A printer plus a couple spools and the inevitable failed attempts will cost more than three professionally printed parts, and you will spend hours learning to get there. The break-even point for buying is usually high-frequency, ongoing printing, not the occasional project.
The quality factor
A new owner's first prints rarely look like a shop's. Stringing, warping, weak layers, and support scars are part of the learning curve. A service skips all of that. If the part needs to look or perform professionally on the first try, that matters.
A hybrid reality
