"Why is that quote higher than the one I found online?" It is a reasonable question, and it deserves a straight answer. The price gap between cheap and quality 3D printing is rarely about markup. It is about what is actually going into the part: the material, the settings, the finishing, and the odds it comes out right the first time. Here is what you are really paying for.
Price is the tip of the iceberg
Two prints of the same model can cost wildly different amounts because they are not the same part. A bargain print often quietly cuts corners you cannot see in a photo until the part fails. A quality print is built to do its job. The difference shows up the day you actually use it.
What separates cheap from quality
Material grade and choice
The cheapest path is generic PLA on every job, regardless of application. Quality means choosing the right material: PETG for outdoor durability, ASA for UV resistance, TPU for flex, resin for fine detail. The wrong material is the most expensive mistake in 3D printing because the part fails and you pay twice.
Layer height and resolution
Thicker layers print faster and cheaper but look and feel rougher. Finer layers take longer and cost more but give clean surfaces and crisp detail. Quality means matching resolution to the part instead of running everything as fast as possible.
Infill and strength
Infill is the internal structure. A hollow or sparsely filled part is cheaper and lighter but weaker. A load-bearing part needs appropriate infill and wall count. Cheap prints often skimp here, which is invisible until the part cracks under stress.
Orientation and support strategy
Thoughtful orientation puts strength where the load is and minimizes ugly support scars. Rushed jobs print in whatever orientation is fastest, leaving weak axes and rough faces.
Finishing and quality control
Quality includes clean support removal, inspection, and sometimes post-processing. Cheap often means whatever comes off the plate, supports and all, no checking.

When cheap is actually fine

For a quick prototype, a desk toy, a one-time display piece, or a part under no stress and out of the sun, a fast, economical print is the smart, honest choice. Paying for aerospace settings on a knickknack is a waste, and a good shop will tell you so.
When cheap costs more
Cheap becomes expensive when:
- The part is structural and fails under load.
- It lives in heat or sun and the wrong material deforms.
- It must fit precisely and sloppy settings blow the tolerance.
- A failed bargain print sends you back to square one, paying again.
In those cases, the "savings" evaporate the moment you reprint.

The right approach is to ask what the part does, then quote the settings that job actually needs, no more, no less. You should never pay for overkill, and you should never get quietly shortchanged on a part that matters. That conversation is the value.
