How to Choose the Right 3D Printing Material for Your Project
The single most important decision in a custom 3D print is not the printer or the settings, it is the material. The same exact model in PLA versus nylon behaves completely differently in the real world. Choose right and your part lasts for years, choose wrong and it warps in a hot car or snaps under load. Here is how to match material to use, the way we do it for customers every day.
Start with the question that matters: where does it live?
Forget the spec sheets for a second. The fastest way to narrow down material is to answer four questions about how the part will be used:
- Does it take load or impact? Brackets, clips, and tools need toughness.
- Will it get hot? A part in a car, near electronics, or outdoors in a Texas summer faces real heat.
- Does it live outside? Sunlight (UV) destroys some plastics quickly.
- Does it need fine detail or a smooth show finish? Miniatures and display pieces have different needs than functional parts.

How we read those tradeoffs
PLA: the easy default for indoor and display
PLA prints crisply, holds detail, and is affordable. It is perfect for prototypes, models, and parts that live indoors and do not take much load. Its weakness is heat, PLA starts to soften around the temperature of a closed car in summer, which here in Texas rules it out for anything left in a vehicle.
PETG: the practical functional workhorse
PETG is our most-recommended material for everyday functional parts. It is tougher than PLA, handles moderate heat, resists moisture, and has a bit of flex so it does not shatter. Enclosures, brackets, organizers, and replacement parts all do well in PETG.
ABS and ASA: heat and the outdoors
ABS is tough and heat-resistant and can be vapor smoothed to a molded finish, but it is not UV-stable and prefers a controlled print environment. ASA is the outdoor champion, it shares ABS's strength and heat resistance but adds excellent UV resistance, so it holds up in direct Texas sun without going brittle or fading. For automotive trim, outdoor mounts, and signage, ASA is usually the answer.
Nylon: toughness and wear
Nylon is the choice for parts that flex, slide, or take repeated stress, gears, hinges, clips, and high-wear mechanical components. It is strong and durable but more demanding to print, so it costs a bit more.
Resin: when detail is everything
For miniatures, highly detailed models, or parts needing an ultra-smooth surface straight off the printer, resin (SLA/DLP) wins. The tradeoff is that resin parts are more brittle and not ideal for load-bearing or outdoor use. See our guide on FDM versus resin printing for the full picture.
