Clear & Transparent 3D Printing: What's Possible
"Can you print it clear?" is one of the trickier questions we get, and the honest answer is: yes, but it takes work, and your expectations matter. True optical glass-like clarity is one of the hardest things to achieve in 3D printing, because the very layers that build a part also scatter light. The good news is that with the right material, design, and finishing, you can get anything from frosted translucency to genuinely see-through parts.
Why clear prints are hard
A 3D print is built from stacked layers of extruded plastic. Every boundary between layers, every gap between walls, and every tiny air pocket scatters light. Even when the plastic itself is perfectly transparent, all those internal surfaces turn a part cloudy, the same way crushed glass looks white even though a window pane is clear.
So getting clarity is not about finding magic clear filament. It is about minimizing internal surfaces and then smoothing the external ones. There are two main routes, and they give very different results.
Route 1: clear FDM (filament) prints
The workhorse here is clear PETG, with clear PLA and polycarbonate as alternatives. PETG bonds well between layers, which reduces internal scattering, and it is a tough, useful material to begin with. Out of the box, a normal PETG print comes out translucent and frosted, not clear.
To push FDM toward real clarity, we use a few tricks:
- Print with thick walls and high or solid infill so the part is dense plastic with few internal gaps
- Slow the print and tune temperature so layers fuse cleanly with minimal voids
- Orient the part so the surfaces you want clear are simple and flat
- Sand and polish the outside, working through fine grits, then buff or apply a clear coat to fill the remaining layer texture
A clear coat or epoxy resin coating on the outside is often the single biggest improvement, because it fills surface roughness and lets light pass straight through. With effort, FDM clear parts range from attractive frosted/translucent to quite transparent, but they rarely reach optical-glass clarity.
Route 2: clear resin (SLA) prints
For the closest thing to true transparency, resin printing wins. Clear and "water clear" resins, finished properly, can produce parts you can genuinely see through, which is why resin is the choice for lenses, light pipes, and showpiece transparent models.
Resin clarity still requires finishing: parts are sanded smooth and then coated with a clear gloss or resin layer to restore optical clarity to the surface. The internal structure is dense and layer scattering is far lower than FDM, so the payoff for finishing is much greater.

Setting realistic expectations
Here is where we save customers disappointment. A 3D printed clear part is not the same as a molded acrylic or glass part. Even our best clear work has a character to it, more like polished ice or a glass block than a flawless camera lens. Frosted and translucent looks are very achievable and often gorgeous, especially for light diffusers, where you actually want scattering. Crystal optical clarity is possible in resin with heavy finishing but takes real time and cost.
The smartest move is to tell us how clear it truly needs to be. "Lets light glow through" and "you can read text through it" are very different targets with very different price tags. Describe the effect you want, not just "clear," and we will match material, process, and finishing to it.
