How to Paint 3D Prints: A Step-by-Step Guide
A raw FDM print has visible layer lines and a matte plastic look. With the right finishing steps, that same part can look injection-molded, hand-painted, or showroom-ready. Painting a 3D print is not hard, but it rewards patience. Rush the prep and the paint will show every flaw underneath. Do it right and people will not believe it came off a printer.
The golden rule: prep beats paint
The single biggest factor in a great finish is the work you do before any color goes on. Paint does not hide layer lines, it highlights them. Sanding and priming are where the magic happens; the color coat is almost the easy part.
Step 1: Clean the part
Wipe the print down to remove dust, oils, and any release residue. A little isopropyl alcohol on a lint-free cloth works well. Skin oils from handling will ruin paint adhesion, so handle the cleaned part by the edges or wear gloves.
Step 2: Sand to knock down layer lines
This is the heart of the job. Work through grits from coarse to fine:
- Start at 220 grit to knock down the layer lines and any support marks.
- Move to 400 grit to smooth the surface and erase the 220 scratches.
- Wet sand if you want an even finer result, keeping the paper damp to clear debris.
Sand in small circles and check your progress under good light. Stop when the surface feels uniformly smooth. For deep gaps, fill with a spot putty or filler primer, let it cure, and sand again.
Step 3: Prime
Primer is the bridge between plastic and paint. It does three jobs: it gives the color something to grip, it reveals remaining imperfections so you can fix them, and it unifies the surface color. Use a filler primer for best results.
- Spray in light, even coats from about 8 to 10 inches away.
- Let each coat flash off before the next.
- Once primed, inspect under light. Any flaw you see now will show through the paint, so sand it back and re-prime if needed.
This sand-then-prime sequence is the professional standard, and skipping it is the number one reason home-painted prints look rough.
Step 4: Paint
Now the fun part. Acrylic paints, spray or brush, work well on primed prints.
- Spray paint gives the smoothest, most even result. Multiple light coats beat one heavy coat every time. Heavy coats run and pool in the layer texture.
- Brush or airbrush gives you control for detail work, weathering, and multiple colors.
Let each coat fully dry before the next. Patience here prevents fingerprints, smudges, and runs.
Step 5: Seal
A clear topcoat protects the paint and lets you choose the final look:

Seal in light coats just like the paint, and let it cure fully before handling.
Material matters
Most common print materials, including PLA, PETG, and ABS, take paint well once primed. The steps above apply across the board. If you know a part will be painted, tell us up front, because we can orient and print it to minimize the layer lines you will have to sand away later.
