PLA vs PETG for Outdoor Use
If a part is going to live outside in Texas, the material matters more than almost anything else about the print. A bracket that looks perfect on the bench can sag, warp, or go brittle after a few weeks baking on a fence in the Cypress sun. The two materials people ask us about most for outdoor work are PLA and PETG, and the difference between them outdoors is dramatic. Here is how we think about it.
The core problem: heat and sun
PLA is the easiest material to print and it looks great, but it has a low heat tolerance. On a hot dashboard or in direct summer sun, PLA can soften and deform. In Greater Houston, where a closed car or a south-facing wall easily passes the temperature where PLA starts to lose its shape, that is a real risk, not a theoretical one. PLA also gets brittle over time with UV exposure.
PETG holds up far better. It tolerates more heat before softening, shrugs off moisture, and stays tougher and more flexible as it ages. It is our default recommendation for anything that lives outdoors or in a hot vehicle.
Where each one belongs
- PLA: indoor display pieces, prototypes, decor, anything kept out of direct heat and sun
- PETG: outdoor brackets, planters, hose and irrigation parts, fixtures, signage, weather-exposed fasteners
- ASA: the step up when UV stability is the top priority, like long-term outdoor parts that must keep their color and strength for years
ASA deserves a mention because it is built for the outdoors. It resists UV better than PETG and is a strong choice for parts that will sit in full sun season after season. For most home and small-business outdoor projects, PETG is the practical sweet spot of cost, durability, and printability, and we move to ASA when the application truly demands it.

What this looks like in real projects
A customer brings us a mounting bracket for a backyard camera. In PLA it would likely warp in the first heat wave and crack by fall. In PETG it stays put through summer and keeps its grip on the hardware. For a sign that has to hold its color in direct sun for years, we would steer toward ASA.
The same logic applies to planters, sprinkler adapters, deck hardware, mailbox parts, and trailer accessories. If the sun hits it or the temperature swings, PLA is the wrong call. We would rather tell you that up front than reprint a melted part in August.
A few practical tips
- Design outdoor parts with thicker walls; they hold up better to heat and load
- Darker colors absorb more heat, so a black PLA part fails faster than a white one would
- For anything load-bearing outdoors, lean PETG or ASA and add a little extra wall thickness
- If a part will be both outdoors and structural, tell us the load so we can choose material and infill together
Bottom line
PLA is wonderful for indoor and prototype work, but it does not belong in a Texas summer. PETG is the reliable outdoor workhorse, and ASA is the premium pick when UV resistance is non-negotiable.
