How to Set Up Print-Ready Label Artwork (Bleed, Safe Area, Resolution)
Most label problems never happen on the press. They happen weeks earlier, on somebody's laptop, when the file gets set up. A well-built file sails through proofing and comes off the roll matching the proof you approved. A file built wrong costs you a revision round — or worse, a label with a white sliver down one edge. Here's how we'd set up a file if we were sending it to ourselves: 1/16" of bleed, 1/16" of safe area, 300 dpi at print size, and a PDF whenever you can manage one.
Bleed: give the die-cutter room to drift
Our press die-cuts labels from a roll, and die-cutting is a mechanical process. Even with good registration, the cut can wander a hair from run to run. If your background color stops exactly at the cut line, that tiny drift shows up as a raw white edge along one side of your label. It's small, but the eye catches it every time.
The fix is bleed: extend anything that touches the edge — background colors, photos, border patterns — 1/16" (0.0625") past the cut line on every side. When the die drifts, it drifts into more of your artwork instead of into blank liner.
One thing bleed is not: a border. A thin decorative border running just inside the cut line is the most drift-sensitive design choice you can make, because any wobble leaves the border visibly thicker on one side than the other. If you want a border, make it bold or pull it well inside the safe area.
Safe area: keep the important stuff off the edge
Drift cuts both ways. The same shift that can expose blank liner can also shave into your artwork. So keep everything that matters — text, logos, barcodes, contact lines — at least 1/16" inside the cut line. That inner zone is your safe area.
Put together, the math looks like this:

Even our biggest jar label, 4" × 3", comes to 4.125" with bleed — just inside our press's 4.25" maximum print width. If you'd rather not build these dimensions from scratch, our templates have the bleed and safe-area guides already drawn in for every size we cut.
Resolution: 300 dpi at print size — and why screenshots fail
Our press prints at up to 1200 dpi, which means it faithfully reproduces whatever is in your file — including softness. We ask for 300 dpi at final print size because below that, the edges of text and fine artwork start to fuzz in a way you can see at arm's length.
The phrase "at print size" is doing the real work in that sentence. A logo that's 900 pixels wide is 300 dpi when printed 3" wide, but only 225 dpi at 4". Same file, different result. Check the pixel dimensions against the size you actually want it printed.
Screenshots are where this usually goes wrong. A screenshot of your logo pulled from your website is typically 72–150 dpi at any useful print size, and no software genuinely fixes that — upscaling just produces larger, smoother blur.
Straight talk: we can't add detail that was never in the file. If the crispest version of your logo you own is a screenshot, the crispest label we can print is a printed screenshot. Vector art, or the original design file, is always the better starting point.
File formats, ranked
- PDF — our preference. It keeps text and logos as vectors, so they print razor sharp at any size. Export with bleed included and fonts embedded or outlined.
- AI — fine too, if that's where the design lives. Outline your fonts before sending.
- TIFF or PNG — good for flattened raster art at 300 dpi. PNG is lossless, which matters for text edges.
- JPG — we accept it, but JPG compression leaves faint artifacts around type and hard edges. If it's all you have, save at the highest quality setting.
Small text, reversed type, and codes
Small labels tempt small type. There's a floor:
- Body text: 6pt minimum. Below that, the counters — the little holes in e, a, and o — start filling in with ink.
- Reversed text (light on dark): 8pt minimum. Ink spreads slightly into the letterform, so reversed type needs more meat on its bones.
- QR codes: at least 0.5" square, dark on light. Light-on-dark QR codes fail with many phone cameras.
- Barcodes: we verify that they scan on the proof before anything prints.
On a 1.5" × 0.5" vial label, these limits arrive fast. Design for what the size can carry, not for what looks readable on your monitor at 400% zoom.
Color: your screen is RGB, our press is CMYK
Your monitor makes color with light (RGB). Our press makes it with pigment ink (CMYK). Most colors translate fine. The ones that don't are the electric ones — vivid royal blues, neon greens, hot oranges — which land noticeably more subdued in ink, because CMYK physically can't reach them.
If your design software supports it, work in CMYK from the start so your screen stays closer to the truth. If your file arrives in RGB, we convert it and show you the converted result on your proof. And to be straight about spot colors: we print a close CMYK match to Pantone references, not a guaranteed spot-color match. No CMYK digital press can honestly promise more.
One last color note: our press has no white ink. On white materials that never matters. On clear film it means every color prints translucent — bold, dark designs hold up; pale and pastel ones nearly vanish.
What our proof catches — and what it doesn't
Every first run gets a digital proof, and nothing prints until you approve it. The first proof plus one revision round is included. On that proof we flag low-resolution art, missing bleed, text crowding the cut line, and color conversions worth a second look — and we check that barcodes and QR codes scan.
What the proof doesn't do is review your wording. Your content, your claims, and any required warnings are yours to get right; we print exactly what you approve.
