Vial Label Size Guide: Getting the Fit Right on 2–10 ml Vials
A vial label has less room for error than any other label we print. On a 16 mm glass vial, a sixteenth of an inch is the difference between a clean wrap and an edge that lifts by Friday. If you sell peptides, research compounds, or wellness products in 2–10 ml vials, sizing is the decision that makes or breaks the label. Here is how we walk customers through it in our Cypress shop.
Start with two numbers, not a guess
Every vial label decision comes down to circumference and usable height.
Circumference is the distance around the vial body. Wrap a strip of paper around the vial, mark where it overlaps itself, and measure the strip flat. Or measure the diameter with calipers and multiply by 3.1416. A 16 mm vial works out to about 1.98 inches around. Don't eyeball it — vials from different suppliers can vary by a millimeter, and on glass this small, a millimeter shows.
Usable height is not the height of the vial. It's the flat sidewall between the base heel and the curved shoulder. A label that rides onto the shoulder is being asked to lie flat on a surface that curves in two directions at once. It can't. The edge lifts — printers call it flagging — and once moisture works under a lifted edge, the label is done. Measure the straight glass only, and leave a little breathing room top and bottom.
Wrap or panel?
There are two ways to put a rectangular label on a round vial:
- Full wrap. The label is longer than the circumference and overlaps itself, film onto film. That overlap seals the leading edge down, which makes it the most durable choice on a vial that goes in and out of a refrigerator. The catch: apply it crooked and the seam spirals.
- Panel. The label is shorter than the circumference, leaving a strip of bare glass. It's easier to apply straight by hand, and the gap gives you a sight line to check fill level and clarity. The trade-off is two exposed edges instead of one hidden seam.
Most of our vial customers apply labels by hand in small batches, and a panel with a modest gap is the forgiving choice there. If your vials live in cold storage or get handled constantly, a full wrap earns its keep.
Common vial sizes and what fits
These are typical dimensions for standard crimp-top glass vials. Manufacturers vary, so treat this table as a starting point and measure yours before ordering.

A note on height. One inch of label fits most 2–10 ml sidewalls, but on some 2 ml vials a tall shoulder curve leaves less than an inch of straight glass — check before you commit. Our taller bottle sizes (3 × 2", 4 × 2") are exactly that: bottle sizes. Two inches of height has no business on a vial this small.
The workhorses: 2 × 1 and 2.125 × 1
These two sizes cover the bulk of the vial labels we run, and the eighth-inch difference between them is not rounding error. On a 16 mm vial, the 2 × 1" comes up just short of a full lap — a narrow panel gap. The 2.125 × 1" clears the circumference with overlap to spare: a true sealed wrap. On a 17 mm vial the roles shift — the 2.125 lands nearly edge-to-edge and the 2 × 1" opens a more deliberate gap. Same design, different vial, different behavior — which is why we ask for vial dimensions at quote time. Both are stock die-cuts on our press, with no plate fees either way.
The tiny one: 1.5 × 0.5
We offer a 1.5 × 0.5" label for the smallest jobs — small side panels, inner-carton ID, secondary marking. It works, but the math is unforgiving.
After the 1/16" safe area comes off every edge, you're designing in a live area of 1.375 × 0.375". Our floor for body text is 6 pt, which buys you three short lines at most — two if you want them readable at arm's length. Reversed text (light on dark) needs 8 pt or larger, which costs you a line. QR codes need at least half an inch square, dark on light, and half an inch does not fit inside 0.375" of live height — put the QR on the 2.125 × 1" or leave it off. Linear barcodes are possible but tight; we verify every barcode on the proof before anything prints.
Our advice: pick the three things that matter — name, strength, lot — and let everything else live on the bigger label or the carton. The full spec for bleed, resolution, and file formats is in our artwork guidelines.
Why film matters on a cold vial
Here's the scenario that kills more vial labels than any sizing mistake: the vial comes out of the refrigerator, hits warm humid air — in a Houston summer, all air is warm humid air — and condensation beads on the glass within a minute. Our matte and gloss papers are built for dry indoor use, full stop. On a sweating vial, paper wrinkles, softens, and smears.
Our white matte and white gloss films are a different animal: water-, smudge-, abrasion-, and fade-resistant once the pigment ink has dried. Resistant, not invincible — but condensation and constant handling are exactly what they're built to shrug off. If your product ships refrigerated or frozen, tell us at quote time and we'll match it with an appropriately rated adhesive stock — cold adhesion is a property of the specific adhesive, not a blanket promise an honest printer can make.
One more material note: our press runs CMYK pigment with no white ink station, so anything printed on clear film comes out translucent. On a glass vial with liquid behind it, light colors go ghostly. Bold, dark designs only on clear — or better, use white film. The full rundown of every stock is on our materials page.
A tip that costs nothing: label room-temperature, bone-dry vials, wipe the glass with isopropyl alcohol first, and give the adhesive time to set before the vials go cold.
