Vapor Smoothing & Finishing ABS Prints

One of the most common things we hear at Tex's Prints in Cypress, TX is "I want it to not look 3D printed." For ABS parts, there is a finishing process that gets you remarkably close: vapor smoothing. Done right, it turns the visible layer lines of an FDM print into a smooth, glossy, sealed surface that reads like an injection-molded part. Here is how it works and when it is the right call.

What vapor smoothing does

FDM prints are built in layers, and you can usually see and feel those lines. Vapor smoothing exposes an ABS part to a solvent vapor that lightly melts the very outer surface, letting it flow together. The layer lines blur away and the surface becomes smooth and glossy. The result is both cosmetic and functional: it looks finished, and the melted skin helps seal the surface.

This works because ABS responds to the solvent in a controlled way. It is one of the standout reasons to choose ABS when surface finish matters on a functional part.

When vapor smoothing is worth it

Vapor smoothing shines when appearance or a sealed surface matters: product-style enclosures, presentation prototypes, consumer-facing housings, and parts that need to look manufactured. It is also a good fit when a part will be handled and you want it to feel finished rather than ridged.

It is less necessary for hidden internal parts, rough functional fixtures, or anything where the layer lines do not matter. And it is specific to ABS; it is not the finishing route for PLA, PETG, or resin parts, which we finish differently.

How vapor smoothing fits with other finishing

Vapor smoothing is one tool in a larger finishing toolbox. For parts that need a specific color or a painted look, sanding and priming followed by paint is the route, and it works across materials, not just ABS. Vapor smoothing and painting can even work together: a smoothed surface can take paint nicely. For the finest cosmetic detail on small parts, resin printing gets you a smooth surface straight off the printer without smoothing at all.

A few practical notes: vapor smoothing slightly softens the very finest details as the surface flows, so it is best on parts where smoothness matters more than razor-sharp micro-features. It also adds a finishing step and some lead time, which is worth knowing when you plan a project.

Why ABS in particular

The reason vapor smoothing is an ABS conversation is that ABS responds to the process in a controlled, predictable way that other common filaments do not. That is part of a bigger picture: ABS is already a strong, heat-tolerant material we reach for on functional and automotive parts, and the ability to finish it to a molded look is a bonus that makes it doubly useful. When a customer needs a part that is both tough and presentable, ABS plus vapor smoothing is often the combination that hits both at once. PLA, PETG, ASA, and resin each have their own finishing routes, but the smooth-glossy-sealed look from vapor is ABS territory.

Designing with finishing in mind

The best results come from planning the finish before we print. Orientation affects where layer lines fall and where support marks land.
