3D Printing Color & Finish Options
A 3D printed part is not just a shape; it is a shape with a color and a finish. Get those right and the part looks intentional, branded, finished. Get them wrong and even a perfect model looks like a rough prototype. At Tex's Prints in Cypress, TX, color and finish are part of the conversation from the start, because they shape both how a part looks and which material we choose. Here is the full menu.
Color: where it comes from
Most of the color in an FDM print comes from the filament itself. We stock and source a wide range of filament colors, so for many projects you simply pick a color and we print in it. Different materials have different color ranges: PLA offers a particularly broad palette, which is part of why it is great for indoor display and decor pieces. PETG, ABS, ASA, and TPU all come in a solid range of colors too.
For more precise needs, there are two routes:
- Filament color match: we choose the stocked color closest to your target.
- Paint for exact color: for brand colors or an exact shade, we prime and paint the part to hit the color precisely.
If you have a brand style guide, a hex code, or a reference photo, send it and we will get the color as close as the route allows.
Finish: how the surface looks and feels
Finish is the surface treatment, separate from color. Your main options:
- As-printed: the natural FDM surface with visible layer lines. Lowest cost, fastest, great for functional and hidden parts.
- Sanded: a smoother, more even surface, and the standard prep before painting.
- Vapor smoothed (ABS only): a solvent-vapor process that melts the outer skin of an ABS part smooth and glossy for a molded look and sealed surface.
- Primed and painted: the route for exact colors, multi-color parts, and a fully finished appearance; works across materials.
- Resin finishes: resin parts come off the printer smooth and are typically cleaned, cured, and often primed and painted, which is standard for miniatures and display models.
Recommendation table
| Goal | Best route | Material note |
|---|---|---|
| Wide color choice, indoor display | Filament color | PLA shines for color range |
| Exact brand color | Prime and paint | Works on most materials |
| Glossy, sealed, molded look | Vapor smoothing | ABS only |
| Finest detail plus painted finish | Resin, then paint | Best for small detailed parts |
| Tough outdoor part, color held longest | ASA in color | UV-stable; holds color best outside |
Matching finish to the job
Finish and material decisions go hand in hand with where a part lives. For outdoor parts in the Texas sun, ASA holds its color longest, and any plastic will shift over a long enough time in direct sun. For functional parts that need strength, we choose PETG, ABS, or nylon first and treat finish as secondary. For display pieces, color and finish move to the front of the line. For the smoothest possible surface on small detailed parts, resin gets you there before any post-processing.
A few honest notes
Finishing adds steps and lead time. As-printed is fastest and cheapest; painting and smoothing add work and cost but deliver a finished look. We will always tell you the trade-off so you can decide what the part is worth. We also plan finishing before we print: print orientation affects where layer lines and support marks fall, so knowing the target finish up front lets us set the part up to look its best.
Tell us the look you want
The fastest way to a part that looks the way you imagine is to describe the look, not just the shape. A color, a finish, glossy or matte, branded or natural. Upload your model at /upload or describe the look you are after and request a quote at /quote, and we will recommend the material, color route, and finish to get you there. Color and finish are what turn a print into something you are proud to put in front of a customer.
