3D Printed Electronics Enclosures & Project Boxes

If you build electronics, you know the pain of the enclosure. Off-the-shelf project boxes never have the cutouts in the right place, never fit your board cleanly, and always leave you drilling holes by hand. A custom 3D printed enclosure fixes that: ports line up, mounting bosses hold your PCB without screws floating around, and the lid actually closes. Whether you are housing a Raspberry Pi, an Arduino project, a custom PCB, or a one-off gadget, here is how we approach project boxes at Tex's Prints.

Why custom enclosures beat generic boxes

A generic box forces your project to fit the box. A custom enclosure makes the box fit your project:

  • Cutouts positioned exactly where your connectors, switches, and LEDs are
  • Internal standoffs and mounting bosses sized to your board's holes
  • A footprint that matches the space you have to mount it
  • Ventilation slots where heat actually builds up
  • Snap-fit or screw-down lids, your choice
  • Labels and branding printed right into the surface

Choosing the right material

Electronics enclosures often face heat, sometimes sun, and sometimes the outdoors, so the material decision matters more than for a decorative part.

For most projects, PETG is our default: tough, water-resistant, and forgiving to print. If your device runs warm, like a board in a sealed box or near a power supply, ABS handles higher temperatures than PLA, which can sag near 55C and is a poor choice anywhere it might get hot. For anything mounted outdoors or in direct sun, ASA is the answer because it is UV-stable. We sometimes combine a rigid PETG or ABS shell with a TPU gasket to keep dust and moisture out.

Getting the fit right

A good enclosure comes down to clearances. We design around the real dimensions of your hardware:

Mounting and standoffs

We model standoffs to match your board's mounting holes, so the PCB sits secure with no rattling. For boards without mounting holes, we can design slots or clips that grip the edges.

Port and connector cutouts

USB, HDMI, power jacks, headers, antennas: each needs a cutout in exactly the right spot. The most reliable way to nail this is to give us the board's specs or, even better since we are local, the actual board to measure. A millimeter off and a connector will not seat.

Heat management

Electronics make heat. Where needed, we add ventilation slots, larger openings over hot components, or space for a small fan. We place vents where convection actually helps rather than just for looks.

Assembly and access

We design the lid for how you will use it. Snap-fit lids are tool-free and great for boxes you open often. Screw-down lids are more secure for permanent installs. We can add cable strain relief, a battery door, or a removable panel for the parts you need to reach.

FDM is the right tool here

Enclosures are a textbook FDM job. FDM is strong, scales to larger sizes, and is far cheaper than resin for boxes of any real volume. The subtle layer lines of FDM are a non-issue inside a project box. Resin can produce the finest surface detail, but resin parts are more brittle and the cost climbs fast at enclosure sizes, so we reserve it for tiny, intricate front panels or detailed faceplates rather than the box itself.

Being local is a real advantage for enclosures, because you can hand us the actual board and we will measure it directly instead of working from a datasheet that might not match your exact revision.
