A production aid is any tool that helps make the product without being the product. Most plants are full of them, and most of them could be printed faster and cheaper than they are sourced today.
- Fixtures and jigs that locate, hold, and guide parts during work
- Assembly aids that enforce orientation, spacing, and sequence
- Inspection gauges like go/no-go checks and profile templates
- Material handling such as part nests, trays, and kitting bins
- Soft jaws and end-of-arm tooling for grippers and robots
- Guards, covers, and brackets that adapt machines to a specific job
None of these need to be machined from metal to do their job well. They need to be accurate, durable enough for the duty cycle, and available quickly. Printing hits all three.
Where printing beats traditional sourcing
The case for printed production aids comes down to a few clear advantages over outsourced machining or molding.

The revision speed line is the one that changes how a plant operates. When a fixture is cheap and fast to reprint, your team stops treating tooling as permanent and starts improving it. The third revision of an aid is usually far better than the first, and printing makes that iteration affordable.
Material guidance for production tooling
Functional production aids need engineering plastics. Here is how we match material to duty:
- PETG for general-purpose fixtures, trays, and guides. Tough, dimensionally stable, and chemically resistant enough for most floors.
- ABS for aids that see moderate heat or need good impact strength.
- ASA for anything used outdoors or in direct sun, since it resists UV and weathering without yellowing or getting brittle.
- Nylon for high-wear, high-cycle parts, snap-fits, and anything that flexes repeatedly.
- Carbon-fiber nylon when you need rigidity and dimensional stability, such as robot end-effectors and long fixture arms.
- Resin when an aid needs very fine detail or smooth surfaces, like a precise gauge or a master pattern.
PLA stays off the production floor for load-bearing or warm environments. It is a fine choice for a meeting-room display model, but it creeps under sustained load and softens in heat, which is exactly the wrong behavior for tooling.
A practical rollout that works
The plants that get the most from printed aids do not try to print everything overnight. They start small and let results build the case.
- Pick one painful aid that is slow to source or constantly revised
- Print it in the right engineering plastic and put it on the line
- Track the result in cost, lead time, and operator feedback
- Iterate the design since reprinting is cheap and fast
- Expand to the next bottleneck once the first win is clear
This approach keeps risk low and gives your team real data instead of a sales pitch. A single fixture that goes from a two-week vendor wait to a two-day print is usually enough to make the point.
When to keep it metal
Printing is not the answer to everything. If an aid sees extreme heat, very high clamping force, or aggressive abrasion against metal, a machined or hardened tool may still be the right call. The smart move is hybrid: print the bulk of the fixture and design in steel bushings, inserts, or hardened wear plates where the punishment actually lands. You get printing's speed with metal's durability exactly where it counts.
