3D Printing Jigs & Fixtures for the Shop Floor
Every shop floor runs on the small stuff nobody talks about: the drill guide that keeps holes square, the soft jaw that grips an odd part without marring it, the alignment block that makes a fussy assembly idiot-proof. These jigs and fixtures decide whether a job goes fast and clean or slow and scrapped. Why print jigs and fixtures instead of machining them
A machined aluminum fixture is a beautiful thing, but it carries a real cost and a real lead time. You pay for the stock, the programming, the machine time, and the wait. For a fixture you might revise twice before it is right, that is a lot to commit up front.
A printed fixture flips the script. You get a working part in days, not weeks, at a fraction of the cost. When the design needs a tweak, you change the file and reprint instead of re-machining. That freedom to iterate is the real win, because the second or third version of a fixture is almost always better than the first.

Materials that hold up on the floor
Material choice is where printed tooling earns its keep or fails early. For functional shop fixtures we lean on engineering plastics, not display plastic.

We steer clear of PLA for any fixture that sees load, heat, or sun. PLA is fine for a benchtop display model, but it softens in a hot truck or a sunny window and creeps under sustained clamping force. If a fixture has to do real work, it needs a real material.
Adding metal where it matters
Plastic does not have to do everything. We routinely design fixtures with pockets for steel drill bushings, threaded inserts for repeated assembly and disassembly, and recesses for magnets or dowel pins. The plastic locates and holds; the metal takes the wear. That hybrid approach gives you the speed of printing with the durability of metal exactly where the part needs it.
Designing a fixture that actually works
A good printed fixture starts with a clear job. The more specific the task, the better the tool. When you send us a request, it helps to tell us:
- What part it holds or guides and the critical dimensions that must stay true
- The forces involved such as clamping, drilling, or repeated insertion
- The environment including heat, sun, solvents, or coolant exposure
- How many times it runs since a one-off and a daily-use jig get built differently
- Any hardware like bushings, inserts, or magnets you want designed in
If you already have a CAD model or even a marked-up photo of the part, that gets us moving fast. If you do not, a sample part and a description of the operation is plenty to start a design conversation.
