There is an awkward middle ground in manufacturing. You need more than a handful of parts, but not the tens of thousands that justify cutting an injection mold. Injection molding has a wonderful per-part cost, but it hides a brutal up-front bill for tooling and a long wait before the first good part. For runs in the dozens to low thousands, that math often does not work. The tooling problem injection molding can't escape
An injection mold is a precision steel tool that costs real money and takes weeks to build. That cost gets amortized across every part you make, so molding gets cheaper the more you produce. The flip side is that at low volume, the tooling cost dominates and the price per part stays high.
3D printing has no tooling at all. The cost to make the first part is essentially the cost to make the hundredth. That changes which volumes make sense.

These ranges shift with part size, complexity, and how stable the design is. A small, simple, finalized part crosses into molding territory sooner. A large or complex part, or one still being refined, stays in printing's favor much longer.
Why low-volume printing is more than a stopgap
It is tempting to think of printing as the thing you do before you can afford real tooling. Sometimes that is true, but low-volume printing is a legitimate production strategy on its own.

Bridge production: the best of both
There is a smart hybrid worth knowing about. When a product is headed for molding eventually but you need parts now, printing bridges the gap. You print to meet demand and fund the business while the mold is being built, then transition to molding once volume justifies it. That way a tooling lead time never stalls your launch or leaves you out of stock.
Designing for both processes
If you expect to move to molding later, design with that in mind from the start. Avoid features that print fine but mold poorly, and keep wall thicknesses consistent. A part designed for moldability prints perfectly well, but a part designed only for printing may need rework before it can be molded. Planning ahead keeps the transition smooth.
Materials for low-volume production
The point of low-volume production is real, functional parts, so material matters as much as it does in any engineering application.

- ABS for impact strength and moderate heat tolerance
- ASA for any part used outdoors, thanks to its UV stability
- Nylon for living hinges, snap-fits, gears, and high-wear components
- Carbon-fiber nylon for stiff, dimensionally stable structural parts
- Resin for parts needing fine detail and smooth, near-molded surfaces
We reserve PLA for non-load-bearing display pieces and prototypes that will not see heat or stress. For anything a customer will use and rely on, an engineering plastic is the right call.
