Why prototype before you tool

Choosing the right material for the stage
Early on, you want cheap and fast. Later, you want a prototype that behaves like the final product.

Most inventors start in PLA because it is cheap and prints cleanly, which is perfect for nailing down shape and size. As the design firms up, we move to a material that matches how the product will actually be used, tough PETG for functional parts, ABS or ASA where heat and sun are factors, TPU for anything that flexes, and resin for a presentation-grade appearance model. FDM is the workhorse for strong, larger, cheaper prototypes, while resin steps in when fine detail is the priority.
Keeping costs and iterations under control
A few habits keep prototyping efficient:
- Change one variable at a time so you know what fixed the problem
- Print early versions cheap; save premium materials for proven designs
