For anything that gets passed hand to hand, PETG is our default for classrooms because it shrugs off drops and rough handling far better than PLA. PLA still has a place for color-rich display models and lower-stress pieces, and it is the most budget-friendly. For tiny, detailed structures like molecules or fine anatomy, resin delivers detail FDM cannot match. Our material comparison explains the trade-offs in plain terms.
Designing for small hands and big use
Good classroom design is about more than the model itself:
- Round the edges. Fillets on corners make parts safer and less prone to chipping.
- Size for grip. Manipulatives should be large enough to handle and not become a choking hazard for younger grades.
- Make it modular. Snap-together pieces let students assemble and disassemble, which is half the learning.
- Bright, distinct colors. Color-coding fractions, layers, or structures reinforces the lesson at a glance.
- Print spares. Parts will get lost. A few extras in the batch save a headache later.
