Best Materials for Flexible 3D Printed Parts
Most 3D printed parts are supposed to be rigid. But some parts only work if they bend, stretch, grip, or squish. A gasket that has to seal. A phone case that has to flex over corners. A grip that has to feel soft in the hand. For those, rigid plastic is the wrong tool, and the right answer is flexible filament, almost always TPU. TPU: the flexible standard
TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) is the workhorse of flexible 3D printing. It behaves like a tough, rubbery plastic: it bends and stretches, springs back, resists abrasion, and absorbs impact and vibration. That combination makes it the default for parts that need to flex on purpose rather than snap.
TPU also comes in a range of hardnesses. Softer TPU feels more rubbery and squishy; firmer TPU still flexes but holds its shape better. We pick the hardness to match the job, so a soft grip and a semi-rigid bumper are not the same spec.

Design matters as much as material
A flexible part's behavior depends heavily on how it is designed and printed. Wall thickness and infill change how soft or stiff the finished piece feels: a thin-walled TPU part is springy, while a thick, dense one is much firmer even in the same filament. Geometry matters too; the right shape lets a part flex where you want and stay solid where you do not. When not to use flexible filament
If a part needs to be strong and rigid, flexible filament is the wrong choice; that is a job for PETG, ABS, nylon, or carbon fiber composites. If it needs to be UV- and weather-stable outdoors, ASA or PETG is the pick, though TPU still works well for outdoor seals and grommets that must flex. And if it just needs fine cosmetic detail, that is a resin conversation. The skill is matching the give of the material to the actual job.
How flexible parts hold up over time
A good flexible part is not just soft on day one; it has to keep flexing without tearing or taking a permanent set. TPU is well suited to this because it resists abrasion and rebounds well, which is why it works for parts that flex over and over, like straps, hinges, and dampers. For seals and gaskets, the trick is enough compression to seal without crushing the part flat, and we tune wall thickness and geometry to land there. For grips and bumpers that get handled or knocked daily, TPU's impact resistance is what keeps them from cracking the way a rigid plastic would.
Color and finish
TPU is available in a range of colors, so a grip, case, or bumper can match the product it belongs to rather than being an afterthought. Surface texture can be tuned somewhat through design and print settings, which helps for grips that need traction.
