Best Materials for Highly Detailed 3D Prints
Some prints live or die on detail. A miniature's face, a jewelry pattern, fine text, a delicate display piece: at that scale, the difference between "good enough" and "stunning" is whether you can see the layers. Why resin wins on detail
Resin printing (SLA/MSLA) cures liquid resin layer by layer with light, and it can resolve features far finer than typical FDM. The surface comes off the printer smooth, with crisp edges and tiny features intact. That is exactly what you want for:
- Tabletop miniatures and figures with faces, textures, and fine gear
- Jewelry and jewelry masters with intricate patterns
- Scale models and architectural detail with fine lines and small parts
- Display pieces and collectibles where surface quality is the whole point
- Small mechanical prototypes that need tight, clean features
If someone is going to hold the piece close and study it, resin is the material that rewards that attention.
When FDM still makes sense
FDM (the spooled-filament process) builds in layers you can usually see up close, so it is not the first pick for the finest detail. But it is the right call when a "detailed" part is also large, structural, or needs to be tough. A big display piece, a functional prototype, or anything that has to take a load is better in PETG, ABS, or nylon, accepting slightly softer detail in exchange for size and strength. Resin parts tend to be more brittle and are better suited to smaller display-scale work.

Detail also depends on the print, not just the resin
Even within resin, the finished look depends on orientation and supports. We angle parts so support marks land on hidden surfaces, and we plan where supports touch so the visible faces stay clean. After printing, resin parts are washed and cured, and we can sand or finish them for a display-ready surface. Good detail is a process, not just a material.
The model file matters too. Fine detail can only print if it exists in the geometry, so a high-resolution model carries detail that a low-poly one simply does not have. If you are creating or commissioning a model for resin, build it at the resolution you want to see in the final part. Size, scale, and strength trade-offs
Resin is brilliant for small, detailed pieces, but it is not the right pick for everything. Resin parts tend to be more brittle than tough FDM materials, and larger resin prints get more expensive and more fragile. So we draw a practical line: small, detailed, display-focused pieces go to resin, while large or load-bearing parts go to FDM even when they have detail. Knowing where your part falls on that line is half the decision, and it is exactly the kind of thing we will talk through with you before printing.
Color and finish for detailed prints
Resin parts typically come off the printer in the resin's own color and are often primed and painted afterward, which is standard for miniatures and display models. If you want a piece ready to paint yourself, we can deliver it cleaned and cured. If you want it finished, tell us the look you are after and we will talk through priming and paint. For detailed FDM display pieces, PLA gives you a wide color range straight off the printer.
