How Much Material Does a 3D Print Use?
One of the first questions we get at Tex's Prints is simple: "How much material will my part actually use?" It is a fair question, because material is one of the biggest drivers of what a print costs. The honest answer is that it depends on a handful of factors you can mostly control. Here in Cypress, TX, we walk customers through these every day, and once you understand them, the price stops feeling like a mystery.
What "material usage" really means
A 3D print is not solid plastic. Most of what we make is a thin outer shell wrapped around an internal lattice called infill. That means a part the size of a coffee mug might only use a fraction of the plastic you would expect if it were solid. Material usage is measured in grams for filament (FDM) or milliliters for resin, and that number, plus print time, is what turns into your quote.
The good news: you have real control here. Small changes in how a part is set up can swing material use by a lot without hurting how the part performs.
The factors that drive material use
- Size and volume. Bigger parts use more material, and volume grows fast. Doubling the height, width, and depth of a part can use roughly eight times the material, not twice.
- Wall thickness. Thicker outer walls add strength but also weight. Most parts do not need to be tanks.
- Infill percentage. This is the density of the internal lattice. A display piece might be fine at 10 to 15 percent. A functional bracket might need 40 percent or more.
- Support material. Steep overhangs and bridges need temporary supports that get removed and thrown away. That plastic still counts.
- Layer height and detail. Finer layers do not add much material, but they add print time, which also affects cost.

How material ties into price
Two things turn into your final number: how much material a part uses and how long the printer is tied up making it. A dense, tall part uses more plastic and runs longer, so it costs more on both counts. A light, hollow part is cheaper on both. Ways to use less material
- Lower the infill if the part is decorative or lightly loaded.
- Reduce wall count where strength is not critical.
- Orient the part to minimize supports, which we handle for you.
- Hollow large solid models where it makes sense.
- Scale the part down if the application allows.
We do not push customers toward the most expensive setup. Our goal is a part that does its job and lasts, using the material it actually needs and nothing more.
Filament vs. resin usage
Filament parts are priced largely by weight in grams. Resin parts are priced by the volume of liquid resin they consume, plus the supports needed to hold delicate features during printing. Resin tends to cost more per unit volume, which is why we reserve it for highly detailed work like miniatures and jewelry-scale parts, and use filament for most functional and larger pieces.
Getting a real number
