What Makes a 3D Print Expensive (and How to Save)
People are often surprised by how much 3D print prices swing. The same shop might quote one customer eight dollars and another customer three hundred for parts that look about the same size on screen. The price is not arbitrary. It tracks a handful of real costs, and once you understand them, you can usually trim the number without sacrificing the part. Here is the honest breakdown.
The big cost drivers
Size and material volume
The most direct factor is how much material the part uses. A bigger part eats more filament or resin, and it also takes more machine time, which is the larger cost. Doubling a part's dimensions can roughly multiply its volume by eight, so scale matters far more than people expect. If a part can be smaller and still do its job, that is the single biggest lever you have.
Print time
Most of what you pay for is the machine running and a person tending it. Print time goes up with size, with finer layer heights, and with complex geometry that needs lots of slow detail passes. A tall, thin, intricate model can take longer than a chunky one twice its weight.
Material choice
Materials are not priced equally. Basic PLA is the cheapest. Engineering materials like ASA, polycarbonate, nylon, and carbon-fiber blends cost more per kilogram and often print slower and with more failures, which gets reflected in the price. Resin prints carry their own costs for consumables and cleanup labor.
Infill and wall strength
Infill is the internal lattice that fills the hollow core of a print. More infill means more material and more time. A decorative part might be fine at 10 to 15 percent infill, while a load-bearing bracket might need 40 percent or more plus thicker walls. Choosing strength you do not need is a quiet way to overpay.
Detail and finish
Smoother surfaces and crisp small features require finer layers, which multiply print time. Post-processing adds even more: sanding, priming, painting, vapor smoothing, or gluing multi-part assemblies are all hand labor. A raw functional part skips all of that.
Supports and orientation
Overhangs need support structures that use material and add removal labor, sometimes leaving marks that then need cleanup. How a part is oriented on the bed changes how much support it needs. We handle this for you, but designs that avoid steep overhangs print cheaper.
Quantity
Setup, slicing, and machine prep are mostly fixed per job. Spreading that across more parts lowers the per-unit cost, which is why bulk orders get cheaper per piece.

- Use only the strength you need. Let us set infill based on how the part is loaded, not a round number that sounds safe.

- Design out supports. Chamfers instead of sharp overhangs, and split parts that can be glued, reduce support waste.
Where saving goes too far
Cutting cost is smart until it makes the part fail. Going too thin, too hollow, or to a material that cannot take the heat means a reprint, which costs more than doing it right once. The goal is the cheapest part that still does the job, not the cheapest part on paper.
