What actually creates the finish
A 3D print's finish comes from a mix of the filament itself, the process, and any post-processing. Matte filaments scatter light and naturally hide layer lines. Glossy or standard filaments reflect light, which can look premium but also highlights every layer ridge. Post-processing like sanding, priming, painting, or vapor smoothing can take either direction further.

The honest tradeoff
Glossy is less forgiving. Because it reflects light, it shows every layer line, blemish, and fingerprint. Getting a truly smooth gloss usually means post-processing: sanding through grits, priming, and painting or clear-coating, or for ABS, acetone vapor smoothing. That labor is why a high-gloss finish costs more than a straight matte print.

- Is it functional, handled, or going to be painted? Choose matte.
- Is it a display piece or product showpiece where shine sells it? Choose glossy and budget for finishing.
