PETG vs ABS: Choosing Your Tough Plastic
When a part needs to survive real use, not just sit on a shelf, the conversation moves past PLA and lands on two tough plastics: PETG and ABS. Both are stronger and more durable than PLA, both handle abuse, and both are popular for functional parts. But they are tough in different ways, and choosing between them comes down to where your part lives and what it has to endure. Here is how we sort it out for Greater Houston customers.
PETG: tough and water-resistant
PETG is the easygoing strong plastic. It is tough, slightly flexible before it fails, and water-resistant, which makes it a favorite for parts that get handled, dropped, or exposed to moisture. It holds up better than PLA outdoors and in warm conditions, and it bonds well layer to layer for solid, leak-resistant prints.
PETG shines for:
- Outdoor brackets and fixtures that see rain or humidity
- Containers, trays, and bottle-style parts
- Mechanical parts that need toughness without brittleness
- Anything that gets bumped, dropped, or grabbed regularly
The trade-off is that PETG can be slightly stringy and its surface is not always as crisp as PLA, though good print settings handle most of that.
ABS: heat resistance and machine-shop finish
ABS is the classic engineering plastic, the same family of material used in many injection-molded consumer products. Its headline advantage is heat resistance: ABS holds up to roughly 100C, far above PLA and comfortably above most everyday PETG uses. That makes it the better pick for parts near heat sources or sitting in a hot Texas vehicle.
ABS also sands and finishes nicely, and it can be smoothed for a polished look. The catch is that ABS is more demanding to print well, it can warp without good temperature control, and it is not naturally UV-stable for long-term outdoor sun. For prolonged outdoor exposure, ASA is the UV-stable cousin worth asking about.

How to choose
Ask where the part will live and what will try to break it.
- Will it get wet, rained on, or splashed? PETG.
- Will it sit near an engine, a motor, or in a sun-baked car? ABS for the heat.
- Will it bake outdoors in direct sun for months? Neither is ideal; ask us about ASA, which is UV-stable.
- Do you want a smooth, finished, paintable housing? ABS sands and finishes best.
- Do you want the easiest path to a strong, reliable part? PETG.
A lot of functional parts genuinely could go either way, and the deciding factor is the single harshest condition the part faces. Identify that, and the choice gets simple.
