PLA vs TPU: Rigid or Flexible for Your Part?
One of the first real decisions in a custom print is not the color or the finish. It is whether the finished part should hold its shape like a tool or flex like a rubber gasket. That single choice usually comes down to PLA versus TPU, two materials that sit at opposite ends of the rigidity scale. Pick wrong and you either get a brittle part where you needed give, or a floppy part where you needed structure. Here is how we help Cypress and Greater Houston makers choose.
What PLA actually is
PLA is the workhorse rigid plastic of FDM printing. It prints clean, holds tight dimensions, and produces crisp edges and faces. If you are making a bracket, a jig, a display stand, a prototype housing, or a part that needs to stay exactly the shape it was modeled, PLA is the default starting point.
The trade-off is heat. PLA softens around 55C, so anything that lives in a hot car, near an engine bay, or in direct Texas summer sun is a poor fit. It is also relatively stiff and will crack rather than bend under sharp impact. For room-temperature parts that need to stay rigid, though, it is hard to beat on cost and detail.
What TPU actually is
TPU is a flexible, rubber-like filament. Instead of snapping, it bends, stretches, and springs back. That makes it the right call for parts that need to absorb shock, seal against a surface, grip, or repeatedly flex without fatiguing.
Common TPU jobs include:
- Gaskets, seals, and weatherstripping
- Phone bumpers and protective cases
- Vibration dampers and feet
- Grips, handles, and pads
- Flexible hinges or straps
TPU prints slower and demands cleaner modeling than PLA, but it solves problems no rigid plastic can touch.
How rigid is "flexible"?
TPU comes in a range of hardnesses. A softer TPU feels like a pencil eraser; a harder one feels like a tough skateboard wheel. When you send us a flexible part, tell us how much give you want and where, and we will match the durometer to the job.

How to choose for your project
Start with one question: under normal use, does this part need to stay still or move?
If it needs to stay rigid and dimensionally precise, PLA is usually the answer, and if heat or outdoor exposure is a concern you can step up to a tougher material like PETG, ABS, or ASA. If the part needs to flex, seal, grip, or take repeated impact, TPU is the right tool even though it costs more and prints slower.
A surprising number of projects actually want both: a rigid PLA body with a TPU pad, foot, or seal. We print those as separate components and you assemble them, or we design the fit so they snap together cleanly.
A quick gut check
- Will it sit in a hot car or full sun? Avoid PLA; consider TPU or a heat-resistant rigid plastic.
- Does it need to bounce back after bending? TPU.
- Does it need crisp threads, flat faces, and tight tolerances? PLA.
- Is it a one-off display piece on a desk? PLA is cheap and clean.
